So, you’ve finally passed your LGV or HGV driving test, and it’s time to hit the road… right? Well, while you’re certainly free to do so, there may be one or two things you’d like to take care of first. After all, while you’re now a qualified truck driver, you’re still relatively new to driving a large vehicle on public roads. Here are our top three suggested next steps for new truck drivers.
1. Familiarise yourself with as many different trucks as possible
With your HGV practical test all done and dusted, it’s easy to assume that you’ll be fine to jump behind the wheel of any truck – but it’s not quite this simple. Just like cars, all trucks have different nuances in the way that they drive and handle. If possible, it’s a good idea to try out different trucks within your licensed class so you know what you’re in for when it comes to driving for a living.
2. Try to drive with someone else (at least at first)
If driving a car alone for the first time on public roads is daunting, you can imagine what doing the same with an HGV or LGV is like. With this in mind, we’d recommend that you take your first few trips out in your truck with someone along for the ride. In this way, you won’t feel overwhelmed, will feel more confident, and you’ll have someone there as another pair of eyes – essential when you’re driving a large vehicle.
3. Test out various road conditions
Testing conditions are often calm and controlled – and that’s everything the real world isn’t. For this reason, we recommend that you seek out different road surfaces, various types of weather, as well as night and day driving – and try them all out while behind the wheel of a truck. It’s better to experience these situations when you’re in control than when you’re out on a solo job – believe us!
